Canoe / Kayak Trips
Q.Is the Chestatee suitable for beginners?
A.Yes. The Chestatee is a good river to learn how to paddle a canoe or kayak in moving water and easy rapids.
Q.Do I need to wear a life jacket?
A.Yes. We provide high quality, clean, well-fitted PFDs so that you will feel comfortable wearing this most essential piece of equipment.
Q.What happens if I capsize my canoe or kayak or fall off of my tube?
A.Capsizing is part of the sport of river running. There are some do's and dont's that are helpful to safely get yourself back in your craft and heading back down the river. Here are some basics that our staff will review as you depart for your trip.
Before you Capsize
- Wear your PDF
- Always have your personal items in dry containers or secured to the canoe or kayak, we provide floating buckets and ziplock bags if needed
- Secure your car keys or leave them at the outpost to ensure they stay safe and dry
- Paddle in groups when possible
- Avoid obstructions such as downed trees and/or rocks

After you Capsize
- Float downstream on your back, feet first
- Only stand up when you are in calm water or less than knee deep swift moving water
- Avoid floating on the downstream side of a capsized canoe or kayak
- Attempt to hold onto your paddle
Q.What is the minimum age?
A.At normal water levels:
5 years old - Canoeing / Kayaking
4 years old - Tubing
Q.How can I pay for the trip?
A.Visa, Mastercard, Check , Cash
Q.Do I need a reservation?
A.Not always, but it can be very helpful during our busy season. We have 30 canoes and 70 kayaks and a reservation ensures that we have the boat you want available upon your arrival.
Calling ahead is also recommended to:
- Find out current river/weather conditions
- Ensure you do not arrive at the same time as a large group
- Book a dedicated time for a group
Q.Can I bring a cooler?
A.Yes. We encourage you to stop at our property at the halfway point and take a break, eat lunch, swim and enjoy the beauty around you. Please no large coolers, Styrofoam, glass or alcohol. Soft pack coolers work best for kayaks. Coolers are not allowed on the AO Tubing Run.
Q.Do I need shoes?
A.Yes. You can easily injure your feet if they are not covered by a pair of water shoes, old sneakers or crocs with a strap. Flip flops are not appropriate river running shoes.
Q.Are there snakes in the river?
A.Yes. We share the river with them and all the other wonderful river critters.
Q.Does AO rent Canoes and Kayaks to explore other rivers?
A.Yes. We have canoes and kayaks available to rent for off site trips. We do NOT rent tubes for other trips. Our tubes can only be used on the AO Tubing Run.

AO Tubing Run
Q.How long is the tubing return trail?
A.It is a very pleasant 8 to 10 minute walk back up river to re-float the AO Tubing Run.
Q.Can I bring a cooler?
A.No. Only plastic drink bottles are allowed on the AO Tubing Run.
Q.Are shoes necessary for tubing?
A.Yes. It is more comfortable to walk on the river trail with shoes. Always protect your feet. Flip flops do not work well as they come off to easily.
Q.Does AO rent Tubes to explore other rivers?
A.No. We do NOT rent tubes for other trips. Our tubes can only be used on the AO Tubing Run.
